The forum was held in a hybrid format under the auspices of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the United Arab Emirates and attracted more than 500 participants. Staff of the Financial Monitoring Department (FIU) participated in the events in an online format.
The use of advanced IT-technologies by financial intelligence units was the central topic of the Egmont Group Plenary Session was. The discussions focused on:
the use of technology to enhance FIU privacy domestically and internationally;
the use of artificial intelligence to improve FIU operations and increase strategic efficiency;
use of blockchain technology to improve FIU operations.
The events included meetings of 4 working groups (on information sharing; membership, support and compliance; policies and procedures; technical assistance and training), 8 regional groups, as well as project teams and study sessions.
During the plenary session, a number of new members were admitted to the Egmont Group. The Egmont Group now brings together 170 FIUs worldwide.
A large-scale project to upgrade the Egmont Group's IT system was also completed, aimed at improving the state of the information infrastructure and enhancing its security. The Forum approved the relevant package of documents. A representative of the Financial Monitoring Department joined the technical support team of the updated system.
Background information
Egmont Group is an informal association of financial intelligence units. The main objective of the Egmont Group is to support national anti-money laundering programmes in terms of enhancing the exchange of financial information, improving the qualifications of personnel, and facilitating the development of communication channels using new technologies. The Financial Monitoring Department of the State Control Committee of Belarus has been a member of the Egmont Group since May 2007.
